Title: Students and Teachers Together Learn How To Reach Media Literacy Cooperatively.
Age: 15 and up
Language: English for this project. Spanish here in Venezuela
Abstract:
Given the qualitative findings from a study carry out by Julie Coiro on which content analysis reveals that middle school students:
• Are more concerned with content relevance than with credibility.
• They rarely attend to source features such as author, venue or publication type to evaluate the reliability and author perspective.
• When they do refer to source features in their explanations, their judgments are often vague, superficial and lack reasoned justification.
1. We are motivated to take into the account those findings and prepared a project to help prepare students with a different mentality to relate with information on websites and establish definitions and discussions of the dimensions that are involved in the normal activities of looking for information and retrieval it.
2. Besides this knowledge objective, we have agreed that there should be a form to carry out the teaching and learning process so that students can communicate with others students and compare and share findings. This will give more relevance to the task since sharing ideas will give different perspectives to see the problem besides teaching students how to get organized through technology not only to communicate but to empower in its use. The same applies to teachers that have to develop other forms of carrying out the teaching and learning process to be in tuned with educational objectives in the 21first Century.
Objectives:
1. – ORGANIZATION for the task: (Tools described in Chart below)
Teacher from the schools participating are previously organized to monitor the process and carry out the agreed upon strategy that allows students to:
1.1 Organize as a local class: students in each school organize themselves in groups of interest: History, Literature, Social Studies.
1.2 Organize in teams from different schools in order to carry out the job cooperatively.
2. Learning Objectives:
2. 1. - Differentiate the dimensions of critical evaluation using specific terminology.
2.2 - Compare and contrast the terms through a strategy.
2.3 - Apply the strategy to information documented by students during the process.
2.4 - To socialize ideas within the group and in the team.
2.5. - To reach to conclusions about how to read information.
2.6.- To change the attitude about information on The Internet.
Work Process: (4 parts A: with 4 stages. B,C,D)
A.-Describe main work lines
Stage 1 : Concepts and Content
Teachers previously organized with other teachers participating in the activity, prepare a video explaining the concepts that have to be analyzed, (suggested by Julie Coiro): The terms: Relevance. Accuracy. Perspective. Reliability (defining and discussing). Considering the strategy of seeing: quality of content and of the author. In the video also it is explained how to:
• Verify and refute online information
• Investigate author credentials
• Detect bias and stance
• Negotiate multiple perspectives
(Students) See the video and prepare for the active class (Flipped classroom)
To ask students to look documentation selected by them when preparing homework or papers for their studies. Ask students to apply the process of; Verify, Investigate, Detect, Negotiate ; to their own data. Auto evaluate.
(Group) In the Classroom teacher allow time to let students present their ideas about the video. Once the group is clear about the concepts and the strategy for judging the quality of information (explained in the video) group proceed to stage 2
Stage 2: Hands in the Problem (Teacher monitors and helps to organize)
1.-Students share their documentation in their team, through the Forum organized for each team.
2. - Team apply the strategy to the documentation: Quality of Content: To look for Relevance (important) and Accuracy (factual).
Quality of Author: To look for Reliability (Trustworthy) and Perspective (Slant)
Stage 3: Socializing Findings
3. - Team reach the conclusion and socialize with the rest of the class in a Bulleting Board with Stickers, and if it is possible in a Linoit http://en.linoit.com/ In each presentation the group first part is to auto-evaluate the process and explain the problems to reach the conclusions. The teacher monitors the process and evaluates the procedure and findings.
4. - Teacher explains the formative evaluation and gives feedback. Discuss and Appraises
5. - The class interact with each group and gives suggestions and apprise the work done.
The Bulleting Board is modified with the suggested ideas from the class and the teacher’ evaluation.
6. - The Class decides that are ready to Share.
Stage 4: Sharing the well Done Work
5. - Conclusions will be documented and posted, by the students, in a Padlett specially created for the purposes. In this Padlett all the work groups for different school or communities will be appreciated.
B. - How will partners communicate?
A special site will be created to post videos and information from the project.
Teachers from the different schools participating will communicate through Tweeter with a specific # Participations of students in Tweeter will be discuss depending on age and authorization from parents.
The Sharing of work to be done will be organized by students in Linoit created by teachers.
The work well done will be published in Padlet created by the teacher, to students communicate and share publically.
C. - How have you planned evaluation?
So Far we have thought in:
Auto-evaluation of each student about the form to look and manage information.
Evaluation between students to appraise each group work.
Formative evaluation from the teacher to give feedback.
Summative evaluation from the teacher to certificate each group.
D.- How will the students’ work get organized?
Students in class get together physically or connected to share information between them. The Teacher monitors the process and together create the forms and procedures to carry out the project.
To organize a Bulletin Board with all the student’s contribution. Once organized to translate the findings to a Linoit http://en.linoit.com/ specially created to have together all the different findings of the community of participants
Subjects involved: Language, Social Studies,
Results:
• The organization inside the class and in teams with external students will teach teachers and students that collaboration and sharing is the main objective to reach in this 21Century
• Change of attitude and behavior related to the way students relate to the information on the web. This will be appraised through the development of the project and the products elaborated, how they differentiated from the original documents brought the class.
• Some impact in the internal school community due to the elaboration and disseminations of actions and products created during the project execution.
We hope to include:
• The final documents prepared in the Bulletin, the Linoit, and the Padlet.
• The video filmed by the students about the interaction in class.
• The summary of the presentation to the school community.
• Disseminate the events to repeat the experience.

Evaluation
|
Organize the work of students so they can know each other and conform teams from different schools.
|
Teachers from different schools agree to create a Padlet to invite all the students participating to know each other and conform teams. Teachers monitor the process and help the organization. Students help to the activity.
|
A final Padlet with teams of students from different schools.
|
Teacher agree that there are as many teams as it was needed and that they are well formed.
Teachers appraise students for the different presentations of the organization.
Students auto evaluate their participation and collaboration.
|
Prepare a video with the conceptual part that has to be learned.
Prepare the form to communicate through Tweeter for educational purposes with the # appropriated.
|
Teachers create a material to explain the conceptual part of the accurate reading of media. This material is at the disposal of students to be revised outside the class. Could be a video but other materials are perfect to start the project.
|
A material specially created for the purposes of teaching in a different way to reach students from schools associated in the project.
The Nonpalpable product that is communication between the teachers from different school and agreed upon procedures
|
Teachers auto evaluate the product and the implementation through the project.
Tweeter with the # selected and used as the back channel will give documented ideas of this process. |
To socialize ideas with other students in the team.
To make a video about the process in each class, to share later on and document it
|
Active participation in a FORUM created for each team to discuss ideas. Each Forum has the participation of a teacher to help the if needed. Teachers explain the use of the rubric to be used in the final evaluation.
|
A final written documentation of the discussion and the results to be shared with others teams.
Video to be taken for students to the document.
|
Teachers evaluate students’ participation.
Teachers evaluate the final documents and apply the rubric.
|
To socialize ideas with other teams.
|
Students organized in teams post each one the result of the selected Media analysis. This is done in a Linoit
|
A Linoit with as many teams was formed and a post for each team with the ideas about the analysis of the media selected.
|
Students compare different team’s posts and see similitudes and differences.
Teachers compare the results posted, with the criteria specified in the rubric.
|
I hope to introduce this project for the next Global Education Conference Network in the Challenge for the school year 2016/2017
